John Rutter “Gloria”

  • First Congregational Church 345 West Michigan Avenue Kalamazoo, MI, 49007 United States (map)

The First Congregational Church Chancel Choir, under the direction of Music Director Maxwell Trombley, presents John Rutter’s Gloria. in a powerful celebration of Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Accompanied by brass, percussion, organ, and soloists, this vibrant and jubilant setting of the ancient Gloria in excelsis Deo echoes the praises sung by the crowds on the first Palm Sunday: "Glory to God in the highest!" Just as the people welcomed Jesus with shouts of joy, Rutter’s Gloria magnifies this spirit of exultation through its brilliant harmonies and thrilling orchestration.

Sir John Rutter (b. 1945) is one of the most beloved contemporary composers of choral music, known for his lyrical melodies and rich harmonic writing. A British composer and conductor, Rutter has written extensively for choirs, often blending traditional sacred texts with accessible, radiant musical settings. His Gloria, composed in 1974, is a masterpiece of energy, contrast, and devotion—perfectly suited for the joy and reverence of Palm Sunday worship. In recognition of his immense contributions to choral music, Rutter was knighted in 2024 for his services to music.
